The easy first day, skirting the confluence of the Drakensberg and Maluti Mountains, includes a stop at “Surrender Hill”, the site of the infamous capitulation of thousands of Boer guerillas during the second Anglo – Boer war. Here it may still be possible to find a few empty bullet casings remaining from the detonation of the Boer armoury, when the decision to surrender was made. The view from the top of the Brandwater basin into Lesotho is awe inspiring, and the surroundings help bring perspective to the stories of the privations suffered, and bravery shown, of the soldiers of this historic war.

Our afternoon arrival in the quaint village of Fouriesburg allows us time for a stroll through the pretty nature reserve, or for the more energetic, a visit to view some San rock art on a neighbouring farm. A convivial evening in the Country Inn follows.

The Loop continues, parallel with the Caledon River, and along the Lesotho border, to the cherry town of Ficksburg, with views of Hlotse mountain, epicenter of major but little known battles between Basutho and Brit, and the productive farmlands and orchards of the picture perfect Eastern Free State - sometimes referred to as the “conquered territories” and a few minutes spent in the company of some of the old timers of the area will shed further light on these matters, including the boer commando exploits.

Depending on the season, and our luck/misfortune, we might meet the Cherry Queen, or even the winner of the “Mr. Boepens” competition, as it is a cosmopolitan and lively part of the country, with its strategic situation on the Lesotho border.

The return route wanders through the Lesotho lowlands via the interesting wartime fort at Hlotse and the prehistoric footprints at Butha-Buthe, or visits a modern day mixed farming operation, returning to Fouriesburg at sundowner time.

The Roof of Africa rally was designed to test the ability of man and machine to their utmost limits in bygone times, but today a tarred road has taken away the pain but left the pleasures.

Southern Africa's loftiest mountain road enters Lesotho at Caledons Poort, and passes over the towering Moteng Pass, where we look back nostalgically over our recent route and what seems to be the whole of the country right up North to Johannesburg.

Onward we go, past isolated shepherds huts, with sheep bells tinkling their positions, and sure-footed donkeys labouring up and down incredible tracks, shouldering unbelievable loads, to Oxbow, the site of the first ski resort in the country, for a welcome break next to a pristine trout filled stream.

The next section passes the hamlets of Mothae, Mapholateng, Mokhotlong, and the headwaters of the giant Lesotho Highlands water scheme, destined to be the future lifeblood of South Africa, prior to arrival at the renowned Sani Pass for another incredible view, this time Southward. Keen eyed optimists have been known to observe the Indian Ocean from this famous vantage point.

After a careful descent and comfortable night at the Sani Pass Hotel, our leisurely departure finds us cruising into Pietermaritzburg with memories of some very unusual experiences, and in time for a late lunch for those who still need it!

Khatse dam and Eastern Freestate. 3 day 2 night excursion.

Starting from Pietermaritzburg and couriered by Jenny and Jules in a luxury Caravelle, we make our way Northwards along the awesome Drakensberg, in unhurried comfort, stopping where the mood takes us, and enjoying a light picnic lunch and a stroll, at a suitable vantage point. Then over the mountain we go via the impressive Sterkfontein Dam and Clarens, the “in” place to have a country retreat [curio shoppers paradise], through the lovely Golden Gate National Park, on to the quaint village of Fouriesburg and a hearty welcome from our hosts, the Craig family, owners of the “Country Inn”. This will be our home for two nights.

After a highly satisfying dinner, bed, and breakfast we set off for our circuit of the world renowned Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme where the mighty Khatse dam breathes life into South Africa’s fragile river water network, illustrating perhaps our Governments “concern” with elections in our mountain neighbour! The route we follow is guaranteed to take your breath away, and no volunteer drivers will be tolerated. The visit to the information center will give a very good insight into the immense engineering feat that has taken place, almost unnoticed by the outside world.

During the trip back to Fouriesburg we may have time to chat to a few lonely shepherds alongside the road, or even have a look at the prehistoric footprints near Butha Buthe, but the pull of a log fire and convivial sundowners may make us hurry on. Our journey home the next day will be via Bethlehem, Harrismith and possibly include a look in at some historical Boer war sites of interest on the way. You will need passport, walking shoes and very warm clothes in case of snow and, surely, heavy frost and ice in winter !
